In 2026, Ukrainians with a valid residence permit under §24 AufenthG who belong to the groups covered by temporary protection have access to the German labour market and training. A separate permit for each job is normally not required. If your right is proved by a temporary document, the Fiktionsbescheinigung should state Erwerbstätigkeit erlaubt.
Check your own document first, then prepare the information an employer needs. Search through the official Jobsuche of the Federal Employment Agency, company career pages and advice from Agentur für Arbeit. This guide keeps three questions separate: your right to work, documents for onboarding and the requirements of a particular vacancy.
Can Ukrainians work in Germany under §24 in 2026?
A residence permit under §24 Absatz 1 AufenthG gives people covered by temporary protection the right to work and take up Ausbildung. Germany4Ukraine describes access to the labour market for the relevant group as unrestricted. This can include regular employment, part-time work, training and temporary agency work unless a separate professional restriction applies.
§24 is the legal basis for temporary protection, while the work permission is shown in the document issued by the Ausländerbehörde. Do not rely only on an employer or a friend saying that work is allowed. Read your Aufenthaltserlaubnis or Fiktionsbescheinigung.
How to check work permission in your document
- Identify the document. Look for an Aufenthaltserlaubnis under §24 Absatz 1 AufenthG or a Fiktionsbescheinigung issued in connection with a §24 application.
- Read the additional condition. Look for the exact wording Erwerbstätigkeit erlaubt. It confirms that paid work is permitted.
- Check restrictions. If the document limits an occupation, employer or region, ask the authority for clarification before signing.
- Resolve uncertainty. A missing phrase does not by itself prove that the right is lost, but starting work before official clarification is risky.
What the date 4 March 2027 means
For §24 residence permits covered by the current automatic-extension rule, the document remains valid until 4 March 2027. If the card shows an earlier date, an individual extension appointment is normally not required for this covered group.
Do not apply this rule to everyone who once lived in Ukraine. Germany4Ukraine describes conditions for Ukrainian citizens and exceptions for some third-country nationals and stateless people. If your citizenship or former protection status is different, confirm your case with the Ausländerbehörde.
Which documents to prepare for work
Not every document is needed at the first application. An employer may first assess your experience and then request data for the contract, payroll and insurance. Prepare documents in advance, but send only what was requested through a clear and trustworthy channel.
Documents for different stages of employment
| Document or data | Why it is needed | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Aufenthaltserlaubnis under §24 or Fiktionsbescheinigung | Confirms status and access to work | A temporary document should state Erwerbstätigkeit erlaubt. |
| Passport or identity document | Confirms identity during onboarding | Name and date of birth match the CV and contract. |
| Lebenslauf and work evidence | Helps assess suitability | Use real duties, employment periods and language level. |
| Diplomas, certificates and translations | Help assess qualifications | Check recognition and admission for a regulated occupation. |
| Steuer-ID | Used for payroll and tax processing | Share it only with the employer or payroll office when requested. |
| Bank and insurance details | Needed for pay and insurance registration | Ask what is needed; never share logins or access codes. |
A passport and residence document do not replace a CV, and a CV does not prove work permission. If a company asks for a copy, check who will receive it and why. Never send bank passwords, PINs, one-time codes or a photo of your bank card.

Where to find jobs in Germany
The official Jobsuche of the Federal Employment Agency is a useful starting point. Search by occupation or keyword, place, radius, working pattern and other filters. Try several German names for a role because a direct translation may not match the employer wording.
Job-search channels in Germany
| Channel | How to use it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Jobsuche Bundesagentur für Arbeit | Search by occupation, keyword, place, radius and working pattern. Save suitable adverts. | Employer, place, hours, pay, language and document requirements. |
| Company career pages | Useful when you know employers or want to send an unsolicited application. | Legal company name, official website and application route. |
| Agentur für Arbeit and Jobcenter | Ask about applications, courses, orientation and job search. | Which office handles your case and which documents to bring. |
| Events and recommendations | Use fairs, contacts and professional networks for less visible vacancies. | Who the employer is, what is offered and where to send documents. |
Open the employer website after reading an advert and compare the conditions. A listing can be out of date. Save the link, application date and contact person so you can track replies and avoid sending an unchanged application repeatedly.
How to search in German
- Start with the occupation. Use names such as Pflegehilfskraft, Lagerhelfer, Produktionsmitarbeiter or Verkäufer only when they fit your experience and goal.
- Add a condition. Vollzeit, Teilzeit, Quereinstieg, Ausbildung and Schichtarbeit narrow the search. Check claims such as no German in the full advert.
- Set a place and radius. The commute affects real earnings, especially for shifts and early starts.
- Set alerts. Save useful filters and review new adverts instead of collecting dozens of unsuitable links.
- Be honest about language. State your actual Deutschkenntnisse and choose a level sufficient for safety and communication.
Agentur für Arbeit can advise on occupational orientation, job search and applications. The Federal Employment Agency publishes a telephone line for advice in Russian or Ukrainian: 0911 178-7915. Check current opening hours on the agency website before calling.

How to apply for a vacancy
A German Bewerbung usually includes a CV and a cover letter or short message. The exact files depend on the advert. For a first application, accuracy and a clear match with the vacancy matter more than a long account of your whole life.
- Read the requirements. Separate mandatory conditions from preferences. Do not apply where you cannot prove a required licence or admission.
- Adapt your Lebenslauf. Put relevant experience first and state duties, periods of employment, languages and availability.
- Prepare evidence. Attach a diploma or certificate when requested or important for the role. Check recognition separately for a regulated profession.
- Check contact details. Use a professional email and confirm the phone number and city are correct.
- Keep a copy. Record the application date, vacancy and files sent so you can prepare for a call and keep the conditions.
A short first-contact template
Subject: Bewerbung als [job title] Hello, I am applying for your position as [job title]. I have experience in [field or duty] and can work in [city] from [date]. My German is at level [level]. You will find my CV attached. Kind regards, [name]
Replace every bracket with specific information. Do not claim that a qualification is recognised while the procedure is still open, and do not write a language level above your actual ability.
German language and recognition of qualifications
Work permission and recognition of a diploma are different questions. For a non-regulated occupation, formal recognition is usually not a condition for access to the job. It can still help demonstrate education, find a role matching your training and discuss pay.
Rules are stricter in regulated professions, including some jobs in healthcare and education. Use Anerkennung in Deutschland to check whether your occupation is regulated, identify the competent body and learn which documents are required.
How to improve German while job hunting
- Match language to tasks. Customer, child, patient and technical work can require different communication skills. Read the duties, not only A2 or B1.
- Build job vocabulary. Learn names for tools, shifts, safety instructions and common interview questions.
- Do not wait for perfection. If the role fits your experience, apply honestly and say what language you use and what you are learning.
- Ask about courses. Agentur für Arbeit, Jobcenter and BAMF offer advice routes, but access depends on your status and circumstances.
What to check in the employment contract and pay
Read the contract completely before signing and ask for an explanation of unfamiliar terms. A written Arbeitsvertrag normally records the parties, start date, duration, role, workplace, hours, pay and holiday. A verbal promise should not contradict the written terms.
- Employer. Check the company’s full legal name and address. With Zeitarbeit, find out who employs you and where you will actually work.
- Role and place. Compare duties, address, shifts and any possibility of moving to another site.
- Term and probation. Check the start date, contract duration, Probezeit and termination conditions.
- Working time. Check hours, shifts, weekends, time recording and overtime pay.
- Pay. Compare gross amount, pay period, supplements, deductions and any sector agreement. Net pay depends on tax class and personal circumstances.
- Holiday and illness. Make sure holiday, sickness notification and certificate rules are clear.
Minimum pay in 2026
From 1 January 2026, Germany’s general statutory minimum wage is 13.90 euros gross per actually worked hour. It applies regardless of citizenship and employment volume, subject to statutory exceptions. Some sectors have a higher Branchenmindestlohn.
Gross pay is not the amount that reaches your bank account because taxes and social contributions may be deducted. Keep the contract, payslips and your own record of hours. If pay or hours differ from the agreement, request a written explanation and seek advice.

Where to get help in an employment dispute
If there is a problem with pay, hours, holiday or pressure from an employer, keep messages, the contract, payslips and a record of hours worked. Faire Integration offers free advice on employment rights for workers from third countries. Agentur für Arbeit helps with job and career questions, while the Ausländerbehörde explains immigration conditions.
How to avoid scams and check your first day at work
Financial pressure can make a person accept an offer too quickly. Some intermediaries promise guaranteed paperwork or demand money for a vacancy. Work permission comes from your status and document; it is not something a private person can sell.
Signs of a risky offer
- Fee for a vacancy. Do not transfer money for a promise of employment, §24 paperwork or a reserved place.
- No identifiable employer. Before travel or a first shift, you should know the company, address, contact and conditions.
- Status is ignored. Do not start if your document does not confirm work permission or someone says to sort it out later.
- Original documents requested. Do not leave your passport, Aufenthaltstitel or bank card with an intermediary.
- Secret data requested. An employer should not receive your bank password, PIN, one-time code or account login.
- Contract differs from promise. Compare gross pay, hours, place and employment type with the advert before signing.
Checklist before the first working day
- Status. You checked your Aufenthaltserlaubnis or Fiktionsbescheinigung and the work-permission wording.
- Employer. You have the company name, address, contact person and contract number.
- Schedule. The start date, hours, shift, place and time-recording method are clear.
- Pay. You know the gross rate, pay date, supplements and deductions.
- Documents. Only necessary data was sent, and you kept copies of the contract and documents.
- Travel. You know the route and whom to contact if a shift or journey changes.
- Support. You know where to ask about status, benefits, qualifications and employment law.
If you receive benefits, tell Jobcenter or the responsible authority when you start work. Income can change the amount of support, and the calculation depends on your case. Do not hide employment or stop payments yourself without asking the authority first.
